The 21-year-old Ivorian was named League One’s Player and Young Player of the season, whilst also being included in the division’s Team of the Year. The forward has scored 18 league goals in 41 games, whilst bagging 21 times in 50 matches in all competitions since August. Kone attended the ceremony in Park Lane, London, on the evening of April 28 alongside team-mate Garath McCleary, head coach Mike Dodds, Chief Football Officer Dan Rice and other club officials.
When asked about his development and playing under two managers this season, Kone said: “With the previous manager, he believed in me because he was the one who brought me to the club. “He always knew I could score goals and brought me to the club knowing that I could help the team one day. “Thanks to him, I am doing it, but it’s not done yet.
“We’ve got to finish what we have started.” This is in reference to Wanderers confirming their place in the play-offs, after they missed out on automatic promotion on April 27. Following his evening of receiving accolades, many of his teammates congratulated the striker on his honours.
Right-back Jasper Pattenden said: “Congratulations, Rich! “Thoroughly deserved, and everyone is buzzing for you.” Winger Kieran Sadlier, who has missed much of the season through injury, added: “Knowing your story and seeing you every day, all the boys and I are proud of you." Centre back Joe Low said ‘no one deserves it more’ whilst striker Brandon Hanlan, who is on loan at League One rivals Stevenage, added that the award was ‘much-deserved’ and that this is ‘just the start’.
Wycombe will end their league season at home to Stockport County this Saturday, before taking part in the play-offs. Their opponents have yet to be confirmed, but Wanderers could face Leyton Orient, Reading, Charlton Athletic or Stockport..
