Xbox has recently announced that it is introducing the feature to purchase games and downloadable content (DLC) directly from its mobile app. The update, currently available to beta testers on iOS and Android, is expected to roll out more broadly in the near future. The update will allow users to sign up for Xbox Game Pass, pre-order upcoming titles, and pre install games remotely, provided they have a saved payment method.

A "Buy" button will now appear on individual game pages for those with saved payment methods. This functionality reflects a broader pivot for the Xbox app, which previously did not support in-app game purchases. However, the new update also comes with the removal of the remote play feature which previously allowed users to stream games from their consoles to mobile devices.

In a recent blog, Xbox has confirmed that remote play will still be accessible via mobile browsers and on supported hardware platforms, including select Samsung televisions, Amazon Fire TV devices, and Meta Quest headsets. This announcement follows an earlier announcement by Xbox president Sarah Bond in October, in which she outlined the company's plans to expand functionality within the app. The launch of the purchase feature had originally been slated for November but was delayed due to what Bond described as a "temporary administrative stay.

" Alongside this update, Xbox is also enhancing its cloud streaming options. Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can now stream select owned titles directly from Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One consoles, bypassing the need for downloads. The list of streamable titles has also been expanded, with recent additions including Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed and Subnautica 2.
