Big changes could be coming to the tech world. Yahoo, OpenAI, and Perplexity are all interested in buying Google Chrome after a US judge suggested breaking up Google and selling parts of its business. This proposal is part of an antitrust case to reduce Google’s market dominance.
Yahoo sees acquiring Chrome as a way to quickly grow its browser market share. According to The Verge, Yahoo is actively developing its own browser and is also shopping for one. This move will allow it to scale up faster.
ChatGPT owner OpenAI is also considering making an offer for Chrome. This could allow OpenAI to bring its AI technology to one of the most widely used browsers in the world. However, this move might give OpenAI more access to user data, raising privacy concerns.
Perplexity is another interested buyer. It claims it can operate Chrome on Google’s scale without charging users or lowering the browser’s quality.Parisa Tabriz, general manager of Chrome, has said that the browser relies heavily on Google’s infrastructure, reports Bloomberg.
Testifying in the U.S. Justice Department’s antitrust case, Tabriz argued that separating Chrome from Google’s ecosystem would be nearly impossible.
If Chrome is sold, it could be one of the biggest shake-ups in the tech industry. The browser market might look very different depending on which company ends up with it, or if Google keeps Chrome after all. More updates are expected in the coming weeks.
