BALTIMORE — The benches and bullpens emptied in the fourth inning of Wednesday night’s game at Oriole Park after the Orioles’ Heston Kjerstad stole second base. Kjerstad became upset when he slid in safely and Yankees second baseman Pablo Reyes’ legs fell into the baserunner’s head after he jumped trying to catch a high and wide-right throw from catcher Austin Wells. Standing on second base, Kjerstad yelled at Reyes, who moved closed and yelled back.
The incident definitely looked unintentional, but every player and coach in both dugougs and bullpens spilled onto the field to support their teammate. Everyone called down before there was any pushing and shoving. Before the game restarted, the Yankees made a pitching change, subbing reliever Tim Hill for starter Carlos Carrasco.
At the time of the yelling, the Orioles led the Yankees 4-2. Aaron Judge hit a two-run homer in the first inning for the Yankees, his 10th, then the Orioles responded with four in the second on a two-run homer by Ryan Mountcastle, a solo shot by Ramon Urias and RBI single by Adley Rutschman.
