Detroit Tigers outfielder Matt Vierling and right-handed reliever John Brebbia are preparing to begin rehab assignments with Triple-A Toledo this weekend. Brebbia’s stint with the Mud Hens is expected to be brief. Vierling’s should take longer.
The Tigers announced that Brebbia will formally begin his assignment on Saturday. Vierling has joined the Mud Hens for pregame work and is “preparing” for an assignment, according to the team’s twice-weekly medical report. Vierling played in only two spring training games before suffering a strained rotator cuff .
He hasn’t appeared in a game in roughly 10 weeks. While he won’t need to simulate a full spring training, he’ll likely require more than just a handful of games to get back up to speed. Vierling, 28, played in a career-high 144 games in his second season with the Tigers in 2024.
He hit .257 with a .735 OPS (107 OPS+) and had 28 doubles, five triples and 16 home runs in 567 plate appearances.
He also won the annual “Good Guy Award” presented by the Detroit chapter of the Baseball Writers of America. Another injured outfielder, Manuel Margot, is further along in his rehab. Margot made his second start for Toledo on Friday night as he works his way back from left knee inflammation that landed him on the injured list on April 8 .
Brebbia, sidelined since April 19 with a right triceps strain , may only need one or two rehab appearances before returning to the Tigers’ bullpen. The full medical report is below. John Brebbia is starting a rehab assignment tomorrow.
