MAINESBURG — The driver of a school vehicle and a Towanda Area School District student were killed in a two-vehicle crash near Mainesburg in eastern Tioga County on Tuesday afternoon. State police said the school vehicle was traveling east on Route 6 in the vicinity of Bailey Road went about 2:20 p.m.
It crossed into the opposite lane of traffic and collided with a commercial vehicle. The driver of the school vehicle, identified by police as Ronald Wickmire, 66, was killed, as was a 9-year-old boy. Two other boys, ages 12 and 6, were flown to a medical center, they said, but did not state the location.
There were no other students in the vehicle, a trooper said. State police did not release any other details, including the name of the other driver, saying the accident remains under investigation. Erick Cummings, superintendent of the Towanda district that includes part of eastern Tioga County, posted the following statement on Facebook: “It is with profound sadness that we were notified that four members of the Towanda Area School District community were involved in a vehicle accident at the end of the school day today April 29th.
“The Pennsylvania state police have confirmed that two of our students were transported to the hospital, and tragically, another student and the driver did not survive the accident. “The loss of any life is absolutely heartbreaking and our thoughts and prayers go out to the families, friends, teachers and colleagues of the individuals involved.” Grief counseling services will be available on Wednesday to students and staff in each school building in the district, he said.
