The Vincent Massey Vikings improved to 2-0 in Brandon High School Soccer League action with a 2-1 win over the Neelin Spartans on Monday afternoon. The Vikings controlled possession for most of the game before Emmanuel Adesina buried the game-winner, giving the Grade 12 student his team the win, and most importantly a critical position in the league standings.

While Adesina was quick to give credit back to the team for the composed performance, he did take a brief moment to soak in the feeling of scoring the game-winning goal. It’s a good feeling,” said Adesina. “All I’m thinking in that moment is there’s only one chance at it, so just take it, and I’m glad it worked out. “We needed this.

We have provincials as our goal, and after last year we’re much stronger and more confident. The momentum we have right now is very important in that goal of making provincials this year.” Vincent Massey’s Leaf Klassen opened the scoring in the 14th minute, after the Spartans misplayed a ball in their own box, leading to a turnover that Klassen buried for the game’s first goal.

The Vikings controlled possession for much of the first half, however a Spartan free kick led bounced off the crossbar and straight down into Massey’s box. That led to a quick scramble play before Neelin’s Emytt Pearce found the back of the net just a few feet from the goal line, tying the game 1-1. The score would remain tied, with the Vikings controlling much of the play for the remainder of regulation before Adesina’s game-winner with less 10 minutes left.

(Matt Packwood/The Brandon Sun) The frigid wind out of the north didn’t factor into Massey’s ability to create opportunities, but Neelin did a good enough job of limiting the Viking attack, thanks in large part to goalkeeping tandem of Devin Perreault and Devin Lucas who split time in net equally. “We had possession for most of the game but we just weren’t making goals out of our chances,” said Adesina.

“To show the power that we had through most of the game was pretty important.” Following a 3-2 win over Crocus Plains in the season opener last week, Massey now holds top spot in the league standings with two more games before the league final, which also serves as a zone qualifier for provincials. Crocus Plains will host Neelin Wednesday evening before hosting Massey on May 5.
