In a development that could reshape the political landscape of Lagos grassroots politics, prominent stakeholders in Agege Local Government Area have called on the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, to back his son, Abdulganiyu Vinod Obasa, for the upcoming council chairmanship election.

Speaking to journalists in Lagos on Monday, a coalition of political leaders, party executives, and respected community figures expressed strong support for the younger Obasa’s candidacy. They described him as a qualified and capable contender with the leadership capacity to take Agege to new heights. The group urged the Speaker to reverse his earlier stance and allow his son to run for office under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“It is our heartfelt wish that Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa rescinds his opposition to our collective aspiration of making Ganiyu Vinod Obasa our next council chairman,” said Chief Ganiyu Kola Egunjobi, the incumbent Executive Chairman of Agege LGA, who spoke on behalf of the stakeholders.

Chief Egunjobi was joined by other influential figures, including Hon. Jubreel Abdulkareem (representing Agege Constituency 02 in the State Assembly), APC Local Chairman Alhaji Tunde Disco, and Chief Safari Aderanijo. He asserted that Abdulganiyu Vinod is far from a political newcomer.

Citing his academic and professional background, Egunjobi noted that the aspiring chairman holds both first and second degrees in Accounting and Finance from universities in the United Kingdom and is currently pursuing a PhD at Babcock University in Ogun State.“This is someone who has earned degrees in top UK universities and is now a PhD student,” Egunjobi said. “Professionally, he has worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), joined Providus Bank, and later moved to Parallex Bank, where he served as Head of Performance Management and Strategy.

He eventually set up his own thriving business in real estate and agriculture.”In addition to his corporate credentials, the stakeholders commended Abdulganiyu’s dedication to community upliftment, particularly through youth and sports development.“His football academy, VINOD FA, under Kings Sports, is already making an impact in Agege.

To my knowledge, more than four players from his academy are now in Europe and close to signing professional contracts,” Egunjobi added. “We are looking at another Kunle Soname in the making, just like we saw in Ikosi-Isheri.”They also framed their support as an expression of gratitude to Speaker Obasa, recognising his long-standing commitment to empowering local residents.

“Obasa has lifted many families out of poverty by helping them secure jobs in the civil service and facilitating political appointments,” Egunjobi noted. “For many of us, this is payback time.”The group said Abdulganiyu’s youth and forward-thinking approach make him well-suited to the evolving demands of local governance.

“How old was I when I became Council Chairman eight years ago?” Egunjobi asked rhetorically. “My first Vice Chairman was even younger than me, and the current Vice Chairman is still much younger. So age should not be a barrier.

”With the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) confirming July 12 as the date for elections across the state’s 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas, political activity in Agege is expected to intensify in the coming weeks. The post Agege: Stakeholders mount pressure on Obasa to back son for LG chairmanship appeared first on Nigerian NewsDirect..
