Asda customers discover ‘20 minute rule’ on one type of food

Asda customers have just found out about the store's '20-minute rule' on one type of food sold by the supermarket.

An Asda shopper was stunned to discover a ‘20-minute rule’ on returns for one type of food on a recent trip to their local supermarket. Asda , as one of the big four supermarkets with Tesco , Sainsbury’s and Morrisons , offers no quibble returns on most items if you change your mind and decide you no longer want the product, as long as you have a receipt or a bank statement to make the return with. However, this rule doesn’t apply to frozen food or chilled food, as one Asda customer found out - instead, they were told they only had 20 minutes to change their mind.

Posting in r/Asda, one Reddit user said: “So I went to return some frozen meat to Asda today, and they flat out denied the refund, saying there’s a “20-minute rule” for returning frozen items. “Basically, they claim that if you don’t bring it back within 20 minutes of purchase, they won’t take it back due to food safety. “Here’s the thing - I’ve never heard of this rule.

It’s not on the receipt, not on any signage in the store and no one ever mentioned it when I bought the item. When I asked for proof or something in writing, they just shrugged and repeated the same line like robots. “Has anyone else experienced this? Is this an actual policy? I’m all for food safety, but if this is real, shouldn’t it be clearly posted somewhere?” One user, who claimed to work for Asda , replied: “Yes, there is a 20-minute rule on these things as we don’t know how long you have been hanging around with this item therefore it cannot be resold.

..” Asda, in its returns FAQ online, says about frozen food that the supermarket isn’t obligated to refund unwanted returns on frozen or chilled foods (unless there’s something wrong with it, of course - but not if you just changed your mind).

It explains: “If you’ve changed your mind, simply return the product in the original packaging with all components included, along with the original receipt or proof of purchase. “We are unable to provide a refund for chilled or frozen items if you change your mind.”.
