Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating after “at least one” Mountie shot a suspect on the Montana First Nation on Thursday, according to RCMP. Maskwacis RCMP were asked to help the Edmonton Police Service after people fled from a stolen vehicle into a home on the First Nation south of Edmonton. Two suspects left the home and were arrested, but the third, who police claim had a firearm, remained inside, RCMP said.
The Alberta RCMP emergency response team was called. After 10:50 p.m.
, a “confrontation occurred between RCMP and the suspect, resulting in at least one officer discharging their service weapon,” RCMP said, noting no officers were injured. RCMP were unable to provide information about suspect injuries or status. Postmedia has reached out to ASIRT and EPS for more details.
“Soon after, the residence caught fire, and no one was observed exiting,” RCMP said in a release, adding the Maskwacis Fire Department was called. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is now investigating. ASIRT investigate incidents involving Alberta police that have resulted in serious injury or death and serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.
