After months of speculation, Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Netflix adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia has officially cast Emma Mackey in the role of Jadis (per THR ). Best known for her performances in Sex Education and Gerwig’s own Barbie , Mackey steps into the shoes once filled by Tilda Swinton in the beloved 2005 Disney film The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe .

Earlier rumours had pointed to pop star Charli XCX or The Substance ’s Margaret Qualley as contenders, but Mackey has ultimately claimed the part. Gerwig’s adaptation is said to focus on The Magician’s Nephew , C.S.

Lewis’ sixth published novel but the first chronologically in the Narnia saga. Previous attempts by Walden Media to bring this particular story to life never came to fruition, with their rights to the series eventually expiring. Netflix later secured the property, aiming to breathe new life into the world of Narnia through a series of films and television projects.

Gerwig, fresh off the success of Barbie , was brought on board to spearhead this ambitious effort. Mackey’s casting as Jadis opens a new chapter for the character, who in The Magician’s Nephew is shown at a very different stage of her reign compared to the icy tyrant audiences met in previous adaptations. The story explores the origins of both Jadis and the magical wardrobe, setting up the foundations for everything that follows in the Narnian timeline.

With Mackey’s proven ability to blend vulnerability, sharpness, and intensity, expectations are high for how she will interpret the sorceress whose ambition and ruthlessness shape the destiny of the realm. Emma Mackey Mackey joins another major name attached to the project — Meryl Streep, who is reportedly set to voice Aslan, the great lion and guiding spirit of Narnia. Casting Streep as the voice of Aslan suggests a bold and unconventional take on Lewis’ material, and hints at the unique tone Gerwig may bring to the adaptation.

Gerwig’s first Narnia film is set for an IMAX release over Thanksgiving weekend in 2026, with a Netflix streaming debut following on Christmas Day.
