When Basildon resident, Ché Chesterman found out he had been selected as a contestant on American Idol’s 23rd season, his goal was simple – to make it to the live shows

Having breezed past that milestone, and with public voting set to begin, Ché is hoping that he’s made a positive impression on the millions of viewers who tune in for every episode. Ahead of the results of that vote being announced on Sunday night, the talented south Essex singer has reflected on his success so far and vowed to keep moving forward regardless of the outcome. “It’s been absolutely unreal,” said Ché, who first burst onto screens as an X-Factor contestant in 2015.

“Obviously I’ve done stuff like this in the past, but nothing ever on this level – I don’t normally get nervous around performing, but the stakes are so high on American Idol.” However, with his fate now in the hands of the American public, Ché’s hopeful that his efforts so far have been enough to win over the voting masses. “Apart from one other contestant, I’m the only non-American in the competition – meaning that I don’t have that same hometown support or recognition that lots of the others do,” he said.

“It’s a shame that people in the UK can’t vote, but the support I’ve been getting from everyone back home in Basildon and south Essex has been amazing. “It means so much to me to get all of those messages and to see all of the support – it’s what keeping me going.” Regardless of the results of the public vote, Ché says he has no plans to slow down, and hopes to use his newfound American fame to take his career to the next level.

He’s aiming to release more of his own music and keep performing as often as possible. “I’m going to keep pushing and want to release some more of my own music, because while I’ve done bits, it’s not something I’ve properly explored,” he said. “From the start my goal was to make it to the live rounds, so whatever happens I’m so glad to have reached that.
