BENICIA — The Benicia Public Library is offering a No Reading Required webpage. Supported by a grant from the Lyrasis Catalyst Fund, the effort reimagines how library services are presented, using technology to ensure nonreaders can independently access resources for learning and enjoyment. The library team developed pictograph-based guides, visual search tools, tutorial videos and QR codes that link to trailers or audio descriptions on items like DVDs, video games and audiobooks.
The world can be inaccessible for the estimated one in five adults who struggle with reading everyday materials, from job applications to medical forms. While many libraries, including Benicia, offer adult literacy programs, some individuals face barriers that are too significant to overcome through traditional instruction alone.
