People living along a city road used as a rat-run by drivers have called for it to be made safer following a spate of accidents. Locals in Alexandra Road - which connects Earlham Road with Dereham Road - have called for more traffic calming measures to be added to slow down speeding motorists. It comes after a series of accidents along the street.
In September last year police were called to reports of a collision that led to a cyclist lying in the road after falling off her bike. Three months later a drink driver was given a 24-month driving ban for crashing his car into a tree that had been planted on an island in the road. Paul Neale, Green Party councillor for Nelson Ward, said: "Having spoken with many people living in Alexandra Road, they told me that over the years this road has become a rat-run with speeding vehicles. "I've had the give-way signs along the road upgraded to illuminated ones, but more measures are clearly needed. "There are already two chicanes to slow traffic and one in particular has been damaged several times by cars mounting the raised area.
