Classy’ Charlie Hickford enjoyed a thrilling victory over Jose Manuel Perez last week and hopes another challenge comes around quickly. In a highly-anticipated bout last Thursday at the Ballin’ venue in Maidstone, Cliffe boxer Hickford secured a decisive victory over the formidable Perez. The six-round contest, part of the BoxNation show, saw Hickford rise to the occasion, putting in a punch-perfect performance and showcasing his skill in front of a sold-out local crowd.
Hickford, now 4-0, said: “It was fantastic to box in front of so many of my friends and family. “The support I received, and the ever-growing following is amazing. I really can’t thank everyone enough for coming out and buying a ticket.
“I look forward to speaking with my manager, Francis Warren, to discuss when I can get back out there. I want to stay busy; activity is the key and I’m hoping Queensberry Promotions can get me on the next big card.” From the opening bell, Hickford controlled the range and pace of the fight, countering Perez’s aggressive style with the superior technique and ring intelligence that earned him the nickname “Classy Charlie.
” Perez, a dangerous opponent with an impressive record of 10 knockouts in his 13 wins, was keen to throw his overhand right early, looking for a big shot. However, Hickford, the former four-time National and two-time European medallist as an amateur, remained composed, using his footwork and sharp jabs to control the pace of the fight. The Medway boxer, known for his precision and tactical prowess, landed several clean power shots that visibly shook his opponent in the early stages of the contest.
As the rounds progressed, Hickford’s confidence grew and he began to dominate the exchanges. His relentless pressure and accurate combinations left Perez struggling to find his rhythm. By the final round, it was clear that Hickford was in complete control and the judges’ unanimous decision in his favour was a mere formality.
Commentator and former WBC Super Middleweight World Champion Ritchie Woodhall said: I thought Hickford boxed very well. Charlie should be very pleased with that performance against an experienced opponent in his fourth bout.” This victory marks Hickford’s fourth professional win, maintaining his unbeaten record and solidifying his reputation as a rising star in the featherweight division.
Head coach Dan Woledge said, “I’m very pleased with Charlie’s performance and progress. “He is making his transition into the professional ranks well, another impressive win against a decent opponent. I am looking forward to many more exciting nights ahead for this talented young fighter.
His journey under the guidance of Queensberry Promotions and with the support of BoxNation promises more exciting performances from this promising featherweight.”.
