Chris Wilder insists Tom Cannon is going to be a good player for Sheffield United after seeing the striker break his scoring duck. Cannon scored 11 times on loan for Stoke City in the first half of the season before being summoned back by Leicester to be sold on to Sheffield United for about £10 million, hoping he could fire them to the Premier League. Wilder admits it has been difficult for the 22-year-old since then but he is hoping a goal in his 13th appearance - a 2-1 defeat at Burnley on Monday - will kickstart his time at the club.
He is now bidding to start against Stoke tomorrow night, possibly alongside fellow Stoke old boy Tyrese Campbell and Stoke fan Ben Brereton-Diaz. The result at Turf Moor means the Blades will be in the Championship play-offs while Burnley and Leeds are going up automatically. “It’s been difficult for Tom,” Wilder told the Sheffield Star.
“He came into the team in January, got injured against Middlesbrough and then Tyrese Campbell came into the team and got the Championship player of the month award. So, Tyrese has kept him out. But I thought he was right to put pace alongside Kieffer Moore, and hopefully Tom scoring will give him a boost to kick on.
“He was up against arguably the best player in the division [Burnley’s Maxime Estève], so it was great for him. He’s going to be a good player for us. I don’t think he’s had many chances, and his injury came at an unfortunate time for him.
Tyrese scored some goals and that form kept Tom out. “That’s how it is, and that’s good for us. But ultimately I’m disappointed with the result.
I’m not so sure that I’m looking through rose-tinted glasses, but I thought we did enough to get a result. We’ve just fallen a little bit short, but Tom scoring is a positive as is us showing that ability to fight and scrap against a team that’s gone 31 games unbeaten.” While you're here, we have launched a new WhatsApp group to deliver the latest Stoke news directly to your phone.
