Highlights — Elliston 2-3, 3B, 3 RBI, R; Christ 0-1, R, 2 BB, SB Fueled by the arms of Finn Still, Liam Karlson and Lincoln McVicker, the Trailblazers picked up their first NWAC series win over the Raiders by winning three of the four-game series, including a 5-0, 4-0 sweep in Sunday’s doubleheader at Pierce College. The three straight victories marked the longest winning streak of the season for Centralia (14-20, 5-7 NWAC) and Saturday’s 5-0 shutout to salvage a split was the first goose egg since a 2-0 win over Bellevue on March 15. Karlson, a Tumwater alum, allowed just five hits and one walk in a complete game performance in Sunday’s opener.
Centralia jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings on a hit by pitch, RBI single by Jesse Mazziotti and a wild pitch. In the fifth, an unearned run and a run-scoring double by Isaiah Anzaldua made it a five-run cushion. Sam Matosich recorded two hits for the Blazers.
In the nightcap, Reuben Elliston was responsible for all four runs that came in the third inning. A leadoff walk and back-to-back hit by pitches loaded the bases and Elliston cleared it with a three-run triple. He crossed home on a wild pitch an at-bat later.
McVicker struck out seven in over six innings on the mound to snare his third win of the season. Centralia nearly had a four-game sweep, but Saturday’s opener ended up as a rally for Pierce with two runs in the eighth to tie the game at 3-3 and a wild pitch in the ninth plated the go-ahead run. The Trailblazers went down 1-2-3 in the bottom half.
They went up 3-1 on an Elliston RBI groundout, a Spencer Kowalski RBI double and Mazziotti crossing home on a wild pitch. Kowalski recorded two hits for Centralia and he made an impact in the second game at Bob Peters Field. The catcher launched a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to turn a 1-0 lead into 3-0.
Nolan Christ added an RBI single in the sixth and the leadoff hitter scored on a wild pitch the same inning. Christ added two stolen bases to his two-hit day. Mitchell Rowe also swiped two bags and Kowalski added two hits.
Still went all seven innings and fanned 10 batters to win his first start of the season. Centralia’s next four-game set begins on Friday with a doubleheader at Grays Harbor before Saturday’s return twinbill at home..
