Coronation Street legend shares on-set secret of iconic fight with Gail Platt

Coronation Street legend Sue Cleaver, who plays Eileen Grimshaw, opened up about her time on the soap in its 'Off Script' podcast.

Sue Cleaver, who plays Eileen Grimshaw, opened up about her time on the programme ahead of her exit storyline later this year. The actress, who confirmed at the start of the year she would be leaving the soap, shared her memories for the soap’s joint podcast with Emmerdale, ‘Off Script’. Host and former soap star Kelvin Fletcher referenced how there had been “17 bust-ups” between Sue’s character Eileen and neighbour Gail Platt.

“Everyone remembers the fights and they always get mentioned. “I just remember filming it and it was a really drizzly day – it took about five or six hours to film. “Gail was in her blue dressing gown sat astride me on the cobbles and we just looked at each other and thought what a ridiculous way to pay the mortgage.

” The iconic feud between the pair began when the Grimshaw’s moved onto the street in 2000, with the first fight taking place in 2004. Another bust-up happened in 2015. “There’s been 17 slaps as well,” Sue recalled, referencing other incidents on the street.

The longest-running UK soaps “It was the days before they used to bring in a stunt person and they would say ‘just hit him’ and there was one time they would be seeing stars. “I got knocked out cold once too. It was an upwards punch that went a bit wrong.

You can hear the sound and it was used on the show but I was sent to hospital. “Daniel Day-Lewis has nothing on me,” Sue joked. Sue has appeared in more than 2000 episodes and says it will be the people that she will “miss the most”.

It was revealed last week that her on-screen son Jason, played by Ryan Thomas, will also be returning to the soap for her exit storyline. “I never intended to stay 25 years – I came in and said I was only staying a year,” she added..
