Veteran Nigerian musician Daddy Showkey has publicly criticized Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago over his recent directive to arrest individuals wearing dreadlocks, describing the move as misguided and discriminatory. Governor Bago reportedly issued the order during a security meeting in Minna on Tuesday, arguing that the crackdown on certain hairstyles was part of broader efforts to tackle rising insecurity in the state capital. In a fiery response posted to Instagram on Thursday, Daddy Showkey—known for his iconic dreadlocks—questioned the rationale behind linking hairstyles to criminal behavior.
“Mohammed Umar, na Dada be your problem?” he wrote. “I dey come to Minna but now that you asked your security agents to cut off dreadlocks, so hold your state but make you cut your beer beer [beard] first.” The musician also announced he would cancel his planned trip to Niger State in protest, calling on the governor to lead by example before imposing grooming standards on others.
