Netflix fans who love true crime will be delighted to learn that a new series is set to premiere this year. Dept. Q (Department Q) will star a familiar face from Downton Abbey and an iconic actress from the Scottish cult classic, Trainspotting.
Matthew Goode, known for his role as Henry Talbot in the period drama, will be taking on the lead role of Detective Carl Morck. The eight-episode series is adapted from the book series by Jussi Adler-Olsen and is set to air on Netflix next month. The action is being switched from Copenhagen to the Scottish capital, and the project comes from showrunner Scott Frank (The Queen’s Gambit).
So, what do we already know about the new series? After a violent attack turns DCI Carl Morck's life upside down, the detective is assigned to a cold case unit, named Department Q. At first, the cop is happy to wile away his days there, but his investigative instincts are soon re-awoken. Scott Frank said about working on the new Netflix project, "Matthew [Goode] just felt like this guy.
I was writing with him in mind. I knew that he could do this and that he would lend this undeniable intelligence with his flintiness, but that he could also be emotional without being sentimental.” Goode said to Tudum, "This is the second time that he’s given me a role I don’t think anybody else would’ve cast me in.
In The Lookout [Frank’s 2007 directorial debut], it was a Kansas criminal bank robber, which I don’t really scream. And in this, again, I wouldn’t have necessarily seen that in myself to play this kind of role.” Also included in the cast are Mark Bonnar ( Guilt ), Shirley Henderson ( Bridget Jones ), Jamie Sives ( Crime ) and Kate Dickie ( Inside Man ).
Matthew played Antony Armstrong-Jones in season two of The Crown. Kelly MacDonald takes the role of Dr. Rachel Irving, and is best known for her work in Trainspotting, Brave, and Nanny McPhee.
Ahead of its launch, Netflix dropped a number of stills from the show to whet viewers' appetites. Delighted by the prospect, one Instagram user wrote: "Omg matthew goode!!" Another person added: "Mathew Goode! Added to the list." And someone else penned: "My man is just missing until his next work is going to air.
Yay matthew goode in 2025!!!." Dept. Q airs on Netflix on May 29, 2025.
