Community Leadership award by Business Improvement Areas of BC for DLBA efforts to minimize construction disruption

An association that speaks for Langley City businesses has been recognized for its work to minimize disruption caused by the $19 million overhaul of the Fraser Hwy. one-way that runs through the downtown core. On Tuesday, April 15, at the Business Improvement Areas of BC’s Best in the West Awards, the Downtown Langley Business Association (DLBA) was recognized with an Award of Excellence for their revitalization response.

“To be recognized with the highest award achievable is a true testament of how our work on the Revitalization Response Program is making a positive difference,” said DLBA board Chair Heidi Tobler. “An impartial judging panel recognized, in the category of Community Leadership, the ongoing work we are doing and how it assists our business community impacted by the revitalization of the Fraser Highway one way.” Before construction started, the DLBA began making plans to assist the businesses, be a part of the early and ongoing discussions and continue to stay informed and involved throughout the process.

“We worked with Langley City to provide recommendations for business owners to sit in the monthly revitalization meetings that began before the revitalization started”, stated Teri James, Executive Director of the Downtown Langley Business Association. “Our work continues with signage, business support, clean up efforts, social media updates and a dedicated web page to keep businesses informed and so they feel supported.” “As the single largest revitalization project in Langley City’s history, it was important that the DLBA, Langley City, B&B Contracting Group, Alpin Martin Consultants and Catalyst Engineering all came to the table to establish clear lines of communication at the onset”, explained Langley City Mayor Nathan Pachal.

“We are incredibly appreciative for everyone’s involvement in what appears to be a great example of how a major revitalization should go”. The revitalization began in January 2025 and is anticipated to be mostly complete by mid- to end of August 2025. This includes all underground infrastructure, roads, curbs and sidewalks.

The beautification component may take a bit longer, but the roads will be open to traffic as usual as the beautification portion is completed. “The recognition for a great project was exhilarating, but this award is for everyone involved that continues to work towards a positive outcome, and especially our hard working, small business owners,” said James..
