An Edgefield County man is in critical condition after being shot in the head during a robbery in downtown Augusta. Around 2:15 p.m.
, deputies with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office who were already in the area responded to the shooting in the 900 block of Broad Street as bars and restaurants were closing, according to a media release from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office. When deputies arrived they found a white 61-year old male victim from Edgefield with a gunshot wound to the head, the release said. The victim was transported to an area hospital and remains in critical condition.
Police identified 28-year-old Da'Mon Cole and 27-year-old Destiny Reeves, who were apprehended by nearby deputies. A firearm was recovered from one of the suspects. Cole and Reeves were arrested and charged with aggravated assault, criminal attempted armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
Cole was additionally charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm during a commission of a crime. Police said based on a preliminary investigation, Reeves approached the victim and began leading him toward a nearby parked vehicle, which Cold was hiding behind, the release said. Reeves told police the pair planned to rob the victim and and as the victim approached the vehicle, Cole shot the victim in the head, according to the release.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and his family during this incredibly difficult time,” Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Sheriff Eugene Brantley said in the release. "No one should fear for their safety when enjoying a night out in our city. Incidents like this are deeply troubling, but I’m proud of the rapid and professional response by our deputies.
" Brantley said because of the presence of two deputies on each block, the suspects were apprehended quickly. Cole and Reeves were booked into the Charles B. Webster Detention Center in Augusta.
