Edmonton motorist killed after crashing into tree, police say

Edmonton police say speed was likely a factor in a fatal collision early Sunday in which a car crashed into a tree. In news release, police said the collision took place around 8 a.m.

in the community of McKernan near the University of Alberta’s south campus. A 30-year-old man was reportedly driving a a 2009 Lexus RX350 west on 72 Avenue near 114 Street when he lost control and struck a tree on the north side of the avenue, the release said. The vehicle rolled, eventually coming to rest on its roof.



Officers who responded found the driver dead at the scene. No one else was injured. The EPS Major Collision Investigations Section is still investigating.

The identity of the driver has not been disclosed. “At this time, investigators believe that speed is a factor in the collision,” the news release said.
