National Highways are replacing an old footbridge so that people can cross the road

The M3 will be closed across three days for the installation of a brand new footbridge. National Highways are replacing the footpath 184 over the M3 that connects Whitmoor Road, Bagshot and Lightwater Country Park The footbridge was shut with immediate effect in October, 2023 after an assessment found defects. In December, 2023 the bridge was then removed during a four day closure of the M3 in both directions.

The plan was to design and construct the bridge off site before lifting it into place in May 2025. However, it looks like the project is running ahead of schedule, meaning the road will be closed in April. From Friday, April 25 until Monday, April 28 the M3 will be closed in both directions from junction 3( Camberley ) to junction 4 (Fleet).

National Highways will stagger the closure as they move the bridge safely into position meaning carriageways will stay open for as long as possible. From 12pm, M3 junction 3 southbound entry slip road will shut. From 7pm, the M3 will close northbound (London-bound) from junction 4 to junction 3.

From 9pm the opposite carriageway will close. The organisation aims to open all sections of the road by 6am on Monday, April 28. Drivers are advised to plan ahead and add extra time for their journey.

During this time there are several diversions in place: Northbound leave the M3 at junction 4 follow the A331 north join the A30 heading east join the A322 heading south rejoin the M3 at junction 3 Southbound leave the M3 at junction 3 join the A322 heading north join the A30 heading west follow the A331 south rejoin the M3 at junction 4 In order for the work, and therefore the closure, to go ahead there needs to be the right weather conditions. If high winds are forecast the work may be postponed..
