Flood watch issued for Assiniboine River from Shellmouth to Brandon

A flood watch has been issued for the Assiniboine River between Shellmouth and Brandon as spring runoff continues across parts of Manitoba, the province’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre announced Wednesday. The warning comes as snowmelt runoff progresses through central, western, and northern Manitoba. In southern Manitoba, most of the snowmelt has already occurred.

However, recent warm temperatures are accelerating runoff in the remaining basins, which is contributing to rising river levels in affected regions. According to the Hydrologic Forecast Centre, up to 15 millimetres of precipitation is expected across many Manitoba basins over the next seven days. This amount of rainfall is not expected to significantly alter runoff conditions, but the province is maintaining the flood watch for the Assiniboine River at least through the end of next week.

The Manitoba Emergency Management Organization (EMO) is working with local authorities, Indigenous Services Canada, and Manitoba Municipal and Northern Relations to support communities at risk, including those in First Nations and Northern Affairs areas. The province is warning the public to stay off all waterways, including rivers, creeks, and streams. High water levels, cold temperatures, and floating debris are creating hazardous conditions.

People are also being asked to avoid flood zones, water control structures such as dams and diversions, and any areas where flood response crews are working. The flood watch is part of Manitoba’s ongoing response to spring runoff conditions and may be updated as new data becomes available. The province continues to monitor all affected basins and is maintaining communication with emergency management partners throughout the region.
