Two free throws by one-time Virginia Tech Hokie Sean Pedulla with 12.6 seconds remaining gave K&D Round’s Landscaping a 74-73 victory Wednesday night over Sales Systems, Ltd., in the first game of the 71st annual Portsmouth Invitational Tournament at Churchland High.
Pedulla, who led Mississippi to the recent NCAA Sweet 16, had 16 points, six rebounds and three assists to lead K&D. Dayton’s Nate Santos had 14 points and eight rebounds, Michigan State’s Jaden Akins had 10 points and four rebounds, and Xavier’s Zach Freemantle had seven points and nine rebounds for K&D.Arkansas’ Johnell Davis had 22 points, five rebounds and five assists for Sales Systems, while UC Davis’ TY Johnson added 19 points.
Marquette’s David Joplin added nine points and seven rebounds.The tournament includes 64 of the nation’s top seniors whose college eligibility just expired. It will run through Saturday night, and dozens of pro scouts — many from overseas — will attend and/or watch online.
Several tables behind one of the baskets were populated during the first two games.K&D led by as many as 23 points in the second quarter, only to see Sales Systems take its only lead, 73-72, on a Johnson basket. Pedulla was fouled while going for an offensive rebound, setting up his free throws.
Sales Systems missed a shot to go ahead, and a tie-up for the rebound resulted in a jump ball with 2.1 seconds left. K&D collected the ball after the tip and ran out the clock.
Portsmouth Partnership 101, Norfolk Sports Club 94: Portsmouth Partnership trailed for most of the first 2 1/2 quarters but outscored Norfolk Sports Club 30-19 in the fourth for a victory.East Carolina’s RJ Felton had 22 points for the Partnership, which was 38 of 67 (56.7%) from the floor, including 10 of 19 from 3-point range.
Ace Baldwin Jr., who played two years for Penn State after two for VCU, had 10 points, 11 assists and four steals.Also for the Partnership, Miami’s Matthew Cleveland had 20 points, Indiana’s Oumar Ballo 16 and Tennessee’s Jahmal Mashack 13.
Mashack’s 3-pointer in the final seconds put his team over the century mark.For Norfolk Sports Club, which shot 37 of 72 (51.4%), Boise State’s Tyson Degenhart and Clemson’s Viktor Lakhim had 18 points apiece, LSU’s Cam Carter had 16, Missouri’s Tamar Bates 15 and Butler’s Jahmyl Telfort 11.
K&D and Portsmouth Partnership will square off in a 7 p.m. semifinal Friday.
Sales Systems and Norfolk Sports Club will have a short turnaround before Thursday’s 3:15 p.m. consolation game.
