A pub that raised thousands of pounds for charity with an event featuring global sports stars has been praised by former PM Rishi Sunak as an 'essential part of the local fabric'. The Beeswing Inn in East Cowton hosted a 15-hour-long darts marathon on March 1, with World Cup winner Simon Whitlock and World Seniors Champion Rob Thornton in attendance. Ending in the early hours of the morning at the culmination of a knockout tournament, the event raised more than £7,000 for cancer charity Macmillan.
Mr Sunak, the MP for Richmond and Northallerton, wrote to the pubs landlady Beth Robinson, to congratulate her on her achievement and said: "Your dedication to this important cause and your ability to rally the community is truly inspiring. "It was great to hear how you brought the community together and as well as global dart stars to support the event. "You are a true pillar of our community, and the Beeswing pub continues to be an essential part of our local fabric.
" (Image: Stuart Boulton) "I thought the letter was such a kind gesture and the fact he added so much about past events made it feel really personal," Beth said. "I try to be as community based as possible and it was great to have that acknowledged." Speaking at the event in March, Beth said she hoped it would spark a conversation about cancer, but also provide a fun-filled evening for punters.
“We want the event to be a reason for people to start talking about male-related cancers,” Beth said. “When I leave here, what I want to be known for is that the pub was at the centre of the community. “[The customers] sang, ate, dressed up, drank, chanted and danced to the early hours of the morning.
