A garage burned to the ground in downtown Brandon Tuesday afternoon, as fire damaged a nearby hydro pole and the outside walls of adjacent businesses. Brandon Police Service received a call at 12:25 p.

m. for a structure fire in the alley on the south side of Princess Avenue between Fifth and Sixth streets. A video recorded by a passerby shows the building engulfed in flames higher than 20 feet.

Firefighters managed to reduce the blaze to a smoulder before 1 p.m. No injuries were reported.

The fire was under control by 1 p.m. and yielded a response from Brandon Fire & Emergency Services, Manitoba Hydro and the Brandon Police Service.

(Photos by Connor McDowell/The Brandon Sun) Dana Roberts, owner of Tour Fit Club across the alleyway, told the Sun from the scene that he rushed to move his and his wife’s vehicles from the alley behind their business. However, hydro infrastructure above the alley was “popping,” he said, and his wife’s vehicle was trapped and ended up melting around its tail light and rear bumper. The now-razed garage appeared downtrodden and abandoned before Tuesday’s fire, said Roberts.

He kept an eye on the building for some time, as it is up for sale. The property is currently listed for sale through an estate. Roberts said he noticed discarded needles at the door yesterday.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The building home to Tour Fit Club and other businesses like HNS beauty salon sustained damage to its back wall, with some charring on the exterior. Firefighters climbed to the roof and took a power drill to the wall on Tuesday while the fire fizzled across the alley.

Firefighters leave the scene where an old garage burned in downtown Brandon on Tuesday. A utility pole was “popping” during the fire, according to an eyewitness, after it was damaged by flames. Manitoba Hydro brought an aerial lift truck to the scene around 1:10 p.

m. and removed wires from the pole that had been cut previously to allow for firefighting efforts on the lot. » cmcdowell@brandonsun.
