Chennai: Major roads in the city, including Anna Nagar Fourth Main Road, Uthamar Gandhi Salai, Thiruvottiyur High Road, and Anna Main Road, will soon be relaid as part of a mega road relaying drive by Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC). After months of delay, the GCC has floated tenders worth 400 crore to relay more than 1,000 roads across the city. Deputy mayor Mahesh Kumar said the tenders will be finalised by April 28.
"We recently received financial sanction from the govt, and work will be sped up," he said. Currently, more than 200 road-cut works are ongoing in the city, and these stretches will be relaid towards the end, once Tangedco and Metrowater hand them back to GCC.
Residents said that GCC wasted crucial time for road work between Jan and April, when there was no rain. "Some stretches such as Mayor Basudev Street, Perambur Main Road, and Cemetery Road were damaged immediately after being relaid by the Metrowater department. New roads are poorly patched up after being dug up.
GCC must also ensure road height isn't increased while relaying," said R Ramesh, a civic activist. The deputy mayor said that GCC will hire project management consultants to verify the quality of roads relaid by contractors. "The 40mm height, milling, and whether end-to-end relaying is done will be verified before bills are released," he said.
