Chennai: Stormwater drain work on Bunder Garden Main Road in Perambur has ruptured the sewer lines, resulting in the dug-up part overflowing with sewage for the past three days. The one-km Bunder Garden Main Road in Perambur is often used as a shortcut to reach Perambur railway station by commuters and residents. Last week, Greater Chennai Corporation dug up the road and started digging an SWD pit near a pharmacy in the lane.

GCC dug a pit using an earthmover on the wrong side of the road and broke a Metrowater sewer line. Although the leakage was plugged, the pit still has stagnant sewage for almost three days, posing health and safety risk for residents. M Gandhimathi, a resident of the area, said mosquito menace has spiked due to the stagnant sewage.

GCC workers visit the place every day, but they take no action to fix the issue. There are a lot of children and elderly people in the neighbourhood, and measures should be taken at the earliest to fix this menace, she said. S Ravi Kumar, a regular commuter, said bikers fear skidding risk, and many have fallen in the past week.

Responding to the complaint, councillor of ward 70, C Shreedhani said residents had been using a decade-old sewer line with illegal sewage connections and were constantly letting sewage into it. "We have asked them to get a new sewer connection while the stormwater drain is constructed in the proximity." She also said that 80% of the work is completed and the work is being delayed because the adjoining MH Road comes in a different division.

The work will be completed in 3-4 days, and the roads will be relaid soon, she added..
