The operation, named "Sindoor" after the traditional vermillion worn by married Hindu women, was designed to honour the widows left behind and to send a strong message against terrorism. Conducted in the early hours, Operation Sindoor was a coordinated strike by the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, targeting nine terror hubs in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
According to the Indian Army's statement, the strikes were aimed at terror infrastructure that had been used to plan and launch attacks against India. The most intense operations were in Bahawalpur and Muridke—strongholds of the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). Around 25–30 terrorists were reportedly killed at each location. In Muridke, the target was Masjid wa Markaz Taiba, the ideological centre of LeT, often called Pakistan's "terror nursery."
Initial intelligence suggests that between 80 and 90 terrorists were neutralized across all nine locations. The targeted facilities included launchpads, radicalisation centres, and training camps.
Additional sites struck included JeM bases at Sarjal in Tehra Kalan, Markaz Abbas in Kotli, and Syedna Bilal camp in Muzaffarabad. LeT-linked areas hit were Markaz Ahle Hadith in Barnala and Shwawai Nalla in Muzaffarabad. Hizbul Mujahideen's camps Makaz Raheel Shahid in Kotli and Mehmoona Joya in Sialkot were also destroyed.
Out of the nine locations, four were deep inside Pakistan, while the remaining five were in PoK. Officials stressed that no Pakistani military assets were hit, but claimed that elements from Pakistan's Army, intelligence agency ISI, and Special Services Group (SSG) had been supporting the terror infrastructure.
Pakistan responded to the strikes by accusing India of killing eight civilians, including a child, and called it a "blatant act of war." Following this, Pakistan initiated heavy cross-border shelling along the Line of Control and the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir. Indian authorities confirmed that three civilians were killed in the shelling and that Indian forces had returned fire.
The inclusion of women officers in the media briefing symbolized India's resolve, not only militarily but morally, by honouring those affected and reinforcing its stand against cross-border terrorism.
