Ryan Coogler’s genre-bending historical horror epic Sinners is haunting the box office, with one of the biggest openings for an original film since before the pandemic . Strong critical reviews, commercial success, and a positive reaction from moviegoers suggest that it is likely to remain in theaters for a while, but fans can already preorder the movie on physical media.
The film will be released on Blu-ray, including a 4K Steelbook. Unsurprisingly, an official release date has not been announced. $39.
98 The film follows twin brothers, Smoke and Stack, both played by Michael B. Jordan. The twins return to the Mississippi Delta in the 1930s to open a juke joint using ill-gotten funds from their stint in Chicago’s Mobland, but strange, supernatural visitors threaten to unravel the revelry.
Sinners largely takes place in Smoke and Stack’s small venue, with the film’s hefty $90 – $100 million budget likely owed in part to Coogler’s choice of cameras. The director and cinematographer Autumn Durald shot the entire movie on film, including using IMAX cameras. That means it’s worth seeing on the biggest screen during its theatrical run, and when it comes to physical media, the highest definition available.
In addition to Jordan, the film features supporting performances from Hailee Steinfeld, Delroy Lindo, and Jack O’Connell, and Coogler cast real-life musicians, including Miles Caton, Saul Williams, July Talk’s Peter Dreimanis, and blues legend Buddy Guy. Rolling Stone’s David Fear wrote, “But if Sinners is messy, it’s sometimes pretty glorious, too. Coogler is swinging wide and far beyond the boundaries of franchise fare.
Having spent most of his career finding loopholes in the devil’s pact of Hollywood hit-making (which is to say, finding ways to assert himself during Marvel maintenance), he’s now dabbled in something personal: a genre-blending blast of blood, sex, and homespun Delta blues.” Sinners is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, which means it will eventually land on the studio’s streaming service, Max (formerly HBO Max).
Since the film has just been released, there is no word yet on a streaming date..
