Harry Kane reflects on Bayern Munich’s Champions League campaign after elimination by Inter Milan

Despite a much-improved performance from the first leg in Germany, Bayern Munich fell short 4-3 on aggregate to Inter in the Champions League quarterfinals, having drawn the second leg 2-2 at the San Siro in Milan. Harry Kane gave Bayern the lead in the 52nd minute, but Inter struck back just a few short minutes after via their captain Lautaro Martínez equalized, which came just three minutes before former Bayern defender Benjamin Pavard made it 2-1 to the hosts. An Eric Dier headed goal from a corner in the 76th minute set the stage for an onslaught of Bayern pressure in the closing stages, but they could just not find a 3rd goal on the night that would’ve sent the tie into extra time.

Now that all is said and done, Bayern finished the season with 8 wins, 2 draws, and 4 losses in the Champions League in the first season of the new format. They scrapped through via the playoff rounds, getting past Celtic over two legs, but didn’t do quite enough to get past Inter after they showed what they can do in the round of 16 vs. Bayer Leverkusen.

After the final whistle in Milan, striker Harry Kane, who led the team for goals in the competition with 11 goals, reflected on the two legs against Inter and Bayern’s Champions League campaign as a whole. “We gave everything to win. We had enough chances over the two legs.

Conceding two goals from set pieces today was criminal. It completely shifted the momentum. We came very close.

Football is about moments, they took theirs more than us,” Kane lamented, cutting a dejected figure in Milan (via @iMiaSanMia ). After all, Bayern registered a total of 13 shots on target between the two legs, but only scored 3 times. Despite not getting through to the semis, there is still a Bundesliga title to be one for Kane and the Rekordmeister . “When you’re at Bayern Munich, you expect to reach the semifinals and final of the Champions League. We grew into the competition round after round.

We knew that we could hurt any team in the world. That’s football. We can’t let this ruin our season now.

We still have a Bundesliga title to bring back to Munich. We have a game in a couple of days, we have to get up and get back to winning ways,” Kane reflected (via @iMiaSanMia ). As long as Bayern is able to not slip up drastically in the league, even with an injury-laden squad, Kane will finally be able to lift his first bit of major club competition silverware and put the internet and social media trolls to bed.

At this point, it is the very least he deserves.
