For example, on Monday I spent a few hours with Isla, a Scottish SPCA inspector, to see what her job entails on a day-to-day basis. This helped me better understand that most of Isla’s work is dealing with the public. There was no animal wrangling involved, and we didn’t remove any animals from a person’s care.
I saw first-hand how the cost of living crisis is impacting pets as owners have less money to go around. The Scottish SPCA therefore are not just there for the animals – they’re there for the owners too, and it was interesting to learn about how they try to work with owners who might be struggling. I also attended Dance for Parkinson’s at the Beacon and the Long Covid Support Group.
Both groups take place on days when Parliament sits, so while it was recess, it was important to me to go along and speak with those who rely upon these groups. Inverclyde is fortunate to be filled with lots of people who are passionate and care about their community. It’s those people that help deliver the services and support groups locally which give a great deal of comfort and relief to those who need it.
I therefore want to say a huge thank you to everyone in Inverclyde who gives up their time, energy and resources to better our community. They are the backbone of society..

Stuart McMillan MSP says the Holyrood recess is a valuable opportunity to engage with groups in Inverclyde he might not otherwise find it easy to meet.
