On Tuesday, the Homewood Police Department shared a public service announcement on social media, warning against the illegal use of golf carts in city limits, sparking mixed reactions from the community. The statement read: "Public Service Announcement from the Homewood Police Department: Traditional golf carts do not fall under the state of Alabama classification of a Low Speed Vehicle (LSV) and therefore are not permitted to be operated on public roadways. Minors are also not permitted to operate a golf cart on the roadway.
Any persons operating a golf cart on the public roadway may be subject to receiving a citation. If the person operating the golf cart is a minor, then the minor's parents could receive citations and the golf cart could be impounded." Resident Todd Roberts can be seen on his golf cart most afternoons, with children in tow.
He understands why the PSA is necessary. "You've got a lot of irresponsible parents that are letting their 10-year-olds to drive golf carts, not paying attention to any of the rules of the road," Roberts said. Roberts is frustrated by the people breaking the rules, ruining the fun for everyone.
"I mean, they have a job to do, and the few people that are ruining it for everyone else, give them a ticket, don't give me a ticket," he said. Roberts has a message for the parents who have already broken the rules, and he hopes they will stop. "Just be responsible," he said.
"Be a good parent, don't let your young kids drive a golf cart. Don't drive the golf cart and let a whole bunch of kids hang off the golf cart and stay off the busy roads." If a minor is caught driving a cart on a public street, the cart will be impounded, and the parent will receive a ticket.
