Hong Kong officials spent HK$1 million on installing a new basketball court at the city’s Coliseum, sources told the Post on Sunday, after a National Games inspection deemed the previous flooring “substandard”. Nets and backboards were also borrowed from Kai Tak Sports Park for a test event over the weekend, which put the court through its paces ahead of the multi-sport event in November. More than 3,000 spectators converged on the Hung Hom venue for a series of games involving the Hong Kong under-22 squad and several leading local clubs on Saturday and Sunday, with the former winning the four-team mini-tournament.
A source told the Post that “Fiba-standard basketball stands” belonging to KTSP had been brought over and would be used for the Games later this year. The source also said that Chinese Basketball Association officials had deemed the court unsuitable six months ago, which led to Hong Kong paying out the seven-figure sum for a new one. A senior official at a regional basketball league said “top of the line” flooring from the United States would cost around HK$800,000, including shipping costs.
