The rally was held as the Los Angeles Kings faced the Edmonton Oilers for a favorable standing in the 2025 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, which kicked off on April 19. Though thousands of fans poured into the arena to watch the Kings’ first game in the first round of the playoffs, a group, including Marie, stood outside of the facility as a call to action for DV survivors. The protest comes one year after DV charges were dropped against Boston Bruins forward Milan Lucic.
The NHL player’s wife, Brittany Lucic, refused to testify against her husband of 13 years after he allegedly assaulted her in November 2023, according to USA Today . With no official guidelines in the NHL regarding player bans due to DV, activist Jeane put the protest together to be a voice for those who deserve justice. “The NHL has no policy, no accountability and no excuse,” Jeane told The Mirror US.
“We’re not here to protect reputations — we’re here to protect survivors.” Organizers of the rally told the news outlet: “This is not just a demonstration; it’s a public reckoning,” to emphasize the importance of what they, and survivors, are demanding from the National Hockey League. As the movement for change commenced at the Crypto Arena, Jeane commented on its purpose: to enforce a policy to hold NHL players accountable for their abuse.
“We urge the NHL, we urge the L.A. Kings, to please enforce rules and guidelines and make a change today,” she told Ruthless Media.
She continued, “There are so many athletes who beat their wives and girlfriends, and it always gets swept under the rug. The NHL is not taking accountability for implementing policies to stop it from happening.” Tyler Sebago, actor and activist, rallied alongside Jeane and didn’t mince words about the matter.
“Every other major American sports league has a clear domestic violence policy,” he told reporters at the rally. “The NHL needs to stop hiding behind publicists and PR stunts and enact a clear set of policies that lay down the ground rules for those who choose to abuse. As for what’s next, Jeane hopes all DV survivors, not just wives within the NHL, will be able to take a stand alongside her to protect those who have not come forward about their abuse.
Jeane has even put together a petition to aid in the movement. Click here to follow the Mirror US on Google News to stay up to date with all the latest news, sport and entertainment stories.
