A most wanted, notorious dacoit, Mohammad Arshad, alias Joker, who was critically injured during a police encounter in Lahore, breathed his last on the way to the hospital, reported 24NewsHDTV channel on Sunday. Sources from the Crime Control Department (CCD) said that the dacoit was a mastermind of an interprovincial criminal gang and was involved in various criminal activities such as attempted murder, robbery, dacoity, and attacking and injuring police personnel. The police team was taking him for recovery of arms and ammunition and to arrest his other colleagues near Nishtar Colony Police Station when some unidentified persons opened fire on the police party indiscriminately in a bid to free him from police custody.
When police started firing in retaliation, dacoit Mohammad Arshad became seriously injured but died on the way to the hospital. DSP Model Town Chaudhary Faisal Sharif said that the dacoit was involved in looting the public at gunpoint and, on their resistance, opened fire on them and fled away. It is necessary to mention here that the accused injured a police constable by opening fire on him during a robbery attempt in Baghbanpura.
The DSP said that the dead dacoit was involved in more than 135 serious criminal cases, including attempted murder, dacoity, and robbery. The companions of the dacoit fled away from the scene, taking advantage of the darkness. DSP Faisal Sharif said that a search operation was already underway to apprehend the colleagues of the dead dacoit.
