The Federal Government has temporarily shut down operations at Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu to carry out emergency repairs on a damaged section of the runway. This was confirmed in a statement released on Saturday by Obiageli Orah, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). According to Orah, the runway developed a serious and unexpected crack in a key area, prompting the urgent need for maintenance.

“To address a sudden and severe rupture in the asphalt at a critical point on the runway, emergency repair work will begin on April 22 and is expected to be completed by May 6, 2025,” she said. She added that the closure was in line with safety protocols set by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority. “In accordance with aviation safety standards, FAAN has closed the runway for the duration of the repairs,” Orah stated.

She emphasized that the move is part of FAAN’s broader effort to improve safety and upgrade infrastructure at the airport. “To ensure the safety of passengers and modernize airport facilities, there will be no takeoffs or landings during the repair period,” she explained. Orah also urged airport users to bear with the temporary inconvenience, noting that flights would be redirected to alternative airports.

“We appeal for patience and cooperation from all passengers and stakeholders. We regret any disruption caused by this sudden announcement,” she added. Meanwhile, Air Peace has also announced the suspension of its flights to the Enugu airport, citing worsening infrastructure conditions that pose safety risks.
