Khyber - The district administration, with police support, dismantled a camp set up by the FATA Loya Jirga (FLJ) in Landi Kotal on Saturday. The camp had been established to gather signatures from tribesmen to support revising the decision of merging the tribal areas into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The FLJ had filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court in 2019, opposing the merger.
It has requested the court to form a larger bench to hear the case. According to FLJ Chairman Bismillah Khan Afridi, their lawyer had advised collecting evidence to show the merger was carried out without the majority consent of the tribal population. Afridi said the administration had also disrupted their camp in Jamrud the previous day.
Addressing an emergency press conference at the District Press Club in Landi Kotal, he, along with Hazrat Ali Afridi and others, strongly condemned the move and termed it a violation of their rights. They said their movement would continue, and they would reach out to every household in the region. The jirga leaders demanded a revision of the merger and restoration of the earlier system, claiming it ensured prosperity for the tribal communities.
