Letter: Kids need to put their phones down and read a book

Why aren't more kids reading? Teachers are not the problem. The Department of Education is not the problem. The real problem lies with parents, says Gene Foltz of Muskogee.

There has been a great deal of furor about dissolution of the Department of Education. The department was raised to Cabinet level due to fact that Johnny couldn’t read. Here we are 46 years later with a payroll of 4,400 employees at a cost of $79 billion dollars shelling $102.

24 billion and guess what? Johnny still can’t read. Throwing money at the problem hasn’t solved anything. I hate to see the blame being placed other than where it belongs.

Teachers are not the problem. The Department of Education is not the problem. The real problem lies with parents not making their children read a book at home instead of playing video games or on their phones chasing social media.

The reading teacher has the student for approximately 50 minutes a day. A miracle worker couldn’t teach your child to read in that time. So turn off the cell phone and unplug the computer and give your child a book.

Yes, there will be some resistance, but in the long run, your child will thank you. People are also reading..
