Letter: Paid leave is critically important. Support Senate Bill 277

As a small-business owner, I understand the concerns, but ultimately paid leave increases retention rates and productivity, which benefits businesses, says April Lumpkin of Bartlesville.

Why is Oklahoma not considering Senate Bill 277, authored by Sen. Jo Anna Dossett, D-Tulsa, which would offer paid leave to Oklahoma workers ? We should. Paid leave allows employees to take time off during critical times to focus on their health or the health of their family members without the risk of losing their jobs and all of their income.

As a single parent of four, my mother had to give up a good job when my brother required brain surgery. As a result, our family suffered financial hardship. Our story is not unusual; many Oklahomans face the difficult choice between their jobs and the health of themselves or their loved ones.

Research shows it improves mental and physical health outcomes for workers and their families. As a small business owner, I understand the concerns that paid leave raises for employers and the adjustments needed to manage an employee’s absences. However, paid leave ultimately increases retention rates and productivity, which benefits businesses.

Oklahomans may have differing views, but we all share a common concern for our health and the well-being of our families. Senate Bill 277 speaks to our shared humanity. I urge you to encourage your legislators to support paid leave legislation, as it truly would be a win/win for all Oklahomans: a rare opportunity in today’s world.
