Is it Trump? Is it policies, politics or President Donald Trump? Do you believe in controlling the border? Do you want your country to manage and vet who comes into our country? Former President Joe Biden didn’t. Trump is.Do you believe that the federal government is rife with fraud and inefficiency? Other administrations have just put lip service to the problem.
Trump isn’t.Do you believe tariffs should be reciprocal? Trump is doing something about it. Do you think we should be supplying the world’s energy and not letting our enemies (Russia, China, Iran) get rich? Trump thinks so.
If this is true, then your issue is how it’s being implemented and/or the pure hatred of Trump or politics overshadows what’s good for the country.Be part of the solution. Make your feelings known and help provide guidance.
An example: Vet immigrants and issue green cards with a defined path to citizenship.Terry Morton, Virginia BeachTrump’s planOK, I think I finally get it. President Donald Trump’s overall plan for this new government he’s creating is actually part of his master plan to discourage immigration.
His disastrous tariffs, substantial tax increases for most Americans and inflation while giving billionaires significant tax breaks, dismantling federal government programs, firing thousands of federal employees, blocking any kind of oversight, allowing massive corruption to go unchecked, accelerating an alarming rise in inequality, trashing our Constitution, discouraging accountability for Trump himself or those who do his bidding, and implementing tests of loyalty to Trump himself are all a part of his master plan. I now see the logic in his actions. Why would anyone from other oppressive countries want to risk their families to come here when America is turning into exactly what they are trying to flee?Pamela S.
Hammer, ChesapeakeDOGE cutsI want to congratulate The Virginian-Pilot and Daily Press for your daily reporting of the great work DOGE is doing in ridding us of horrendous overspending, corruption, waste and fraud. Even though these articles come from the Associated Press and New York Times, I plan to save them for my grandchildren to show them how a team of brilliant men and women are uncovering each government department and agency’s duplicative, unnecessary and ridiculous expenditures.A writer stated that what DOGE is doing will only put a “dent” in the deficit.
I say after only 90 days in which DOGE claims to have found tens of billions of waste that it will truly be amazing when the work is done. After DOGE is done I’m sure they will uncover many more billions that should never have been spent. Many people love to use the buzzword of the day: “chainsaw.
” My word would be “bulldozer.”Competence not whims and fairy-tale thinking should be the byword for our government. It’s been a long time coming.
Jon Palmer, WilliamsburgSilenceThe absence of a meaningful response by Tufts University regarding the taking into custody of one of your graduate students, Rumeysa Ozturk, is extraordinary. The op-ed that she published in the Tufts University school newspaper certainly must have gone through a review process. Speaking as a parent of a Tufts University alumnus myself, in my opinion Tufts has a responsibility for assisting her, aggressively, in all ways that are possible.
Also in my opinion, one very appropriate response would be to contact the administration of Columbia University and the University of Minnesota and organize a national protest by all faculty, students and administrators to stand up for what universities in the United States represent — institutions of higher learning that foster critical thinking, respect for all students and faculty, and above all, freedom of speech.Steven L.
