ClimateRe “Earth Day” (Our Views, April 20): I value the editorial board’s consistent approach to the topic of climate change, which I would characterize as “real problems need real solutions.” These real solutions include carbon emission reduction, adaptation, sequestration and restoration. It was bad enough when Gov.
Glenn Youngkin turned his back on coastal Virginia by pretending to have the right to take Virginia out of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative — thereby eliminating many millions of dollars of flood control funding. Now the president is turning his back on coastal Virginia on a much bigger scale, by eliminating funding for climate science, but also for flood control. Then he abruptly halted all permits for future offshore wind projects, thereby putting a squeeze on this industry that promised so much investment in Hampton Roads.
This approach of “climate change might be a problem, but one that we can’t afford to fix” is in stark contrast to the constructive approach demonstrated by The Virginian-Pilot & Daily Press Editorial Board. People are dying today from climate change, and this effort to turn away from every solution promises a troubled future. That future will contain higher human mortality, and will threaten Hampton Roads with weather disasters and economic upheaval.
Ignoring this threat to save money is penny wise and pound foolish.Chris Wiegard, ChesterAsk your doctorAnyone who watches only a moderate amount of television must be astounded by the sheer amount of medical and health-related advertisements. The products cover toe fungus, brain fog, incontinence, vitamin deficiency and everything else one could imagine suffering from.
They claim to be just the cure we need and tell us to ask our doctor if they are right for us. They also list many possible and sometimes horrible side effects, which causes one to wonder how they ever got FDA approval and whether they are worth the risk. And, of course, they remind us not to take their product if we are allergic to it.
Are we really that stupid or do they just think we are?Robert Morrison, Virginia BeachShowerPresident Donald Trump complains about low-flow showerheads, blaming former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden. I looked it up and the Federal Energy Policy Act was dated in 1992 and George H.W.
Bush was president. I don’t know why our president is always talking about things in the wrong way.Seems facts and reality elude our president.
I guess he depends on folks not knowing the reality of what he is talking about and believing everything he says.Donald Lane, ChesapeakeKingAmericans wanted to make George Washington king. He refused.
He served a democratic republic. An image on the White House Facebook page showed President Donald Trump wearing a crown. He serves himself.
Benjamin Franklin affirmed “...
it is better 100 guilty men go free, than that one innocent person should suffer.” He was focused on justice. Trump had an innocent man deported and jailed in a country known for human rights violations.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt created jobs for thousands. He restored prosperity.
Trump is responsible for the firing of thousands of federal workers.President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act in 1964.
He established equal rights for all. Trump is stripping targeted groups of their rights. He is establishing an America where only a chosen few matter.
It is time Americans learn from history, study civics and stay up to date on world events. We must reject the idea that it is all about me. We can not, we must not, repeat the devastating mistakes of the past.
We must protect the system of government that has served us and, indeed, the world so well for more than two centuries.Michelle Degnan, SuffolkSign up for Viewpoints, an opinion newsletter.
