Listen up Boulderites. It is time for a refresher course on driving. Lucky for us all it is a short course with only two sections. This course has been approved by experts! On top of that, your instructor (me) has a mechanical engineering degree!

It’s time for a driver’s ed refresher course Listen up Boulderites. It is time for a refresher course on driving. Lucky for us all it is a short course with only two sections.

This course has been approved by experts! On top of that, your instructor (me) has a mechanical engineering degree! Section number one — when you are in a line of cars at a red light, pull up to the car in front of you. I don’t mean so close you can see that the driver ahead of you is wearing the same earrings. I mean less than a half-car length.

This way the driver 4, 5 or 25 cars back has a better chance of making the green/yellow light, and our traffic becomes less congested. Also, that guy behind you who has been waiting forever to squeeze into his right turn lane can now do so without taking part of your car with him. Section number two — when making a left turn in the left turn lane, it is ok to move out into the intersection while the light is green and then complete your left turn after the light turns red.

That’s right, it is OK! Remember that guy behind you at the red light waiting for you to move up so he could squeeze into his right-turn lane? Well, he is now behind you waiting to make a left turn and desperately wants you to move out into the intersection so he has a chance to make the next light sequence. Give him hope! I’ll be out there watching you all. If you don’t obey the rules I will follow you to the Whole Foods parking lot and slap a Trump bumper sticker on your Tesla while you are not watching.

Roger Pioszak, Boulder.
