On the presidential campaign trail, Donald Trump boasted that he would be able to end the war between Russia and Ukraine in “24 hours”. Nearly three months into his second term, that clearly hasn’t happened. By March, as the scale of the challenge dawned on them, the tune coming from his administration quietly changed: meeting with delegations from Moscow and Kyiv in the Middle East, Trump’s representatives declared they were optimistic that a truce now could materialise in “weeks”.
