George Jeans is currently a Wiltshire councillor for Mere, standing as an independent once again in the local election on May 1. He said: "Independents can argue they can better reflect local views as they do not have to follow the positions of a national party. "As an existing Wiltshire independent councillor, I work with officers who sometimes can solve problems at best and give guidance at worst.
I find that county-wide issues that impact the Mere division need resolving before they get to a higher level like full council. It is unlikely amendments can be won at full council, except in a few cases. READ MORE: John Glen MP: PMQs, management companies and AI — my week in Westminster "Early intervention is required.
For example, a few years ago I spotted new street trading licences were to be introduced and it was proposed off-street functions such as church fetes would need a licence and with the support of others, this was stopped at an early stage. I have also sat on a broadband project board that helped improve broadband provision in the division I represent. "If re-elected I would continue to try, through development control, to balance and maintain the character of our existing buildings with that of new locally acceptable development (a high proportion of which should be for those living locally or needing to live locally) in the area, alongside trying to maintain our local services.

Mr Jeans continued: "It is important to me to continue belonging to local community groups, sit on committees, act as trustee, attend the local town and parish council, belong to a town or parish council and attend local functions, that way I can judge what most people would like. "However, I do my best to represent all. I feel a local councillor should put most of their efforts into local case work and not spend a large amount of time on the wider problems of Wiltshire. I gain satisfaction in serving others.
"Please consider re-electing me at the May 1 elections, for the Mere Division which consists of Mere, Kilmington, Stourton, West Knoyle and Zeals." If you are standing in the Wiltshire Council local elections in Salisbury, please email your manifesto to [email protected].
