Outlander star Sam Heughan appeared on Lorraine to chat about his latest campaign but the host couldn't resist asking if he was in the running for James Bond.

Outlander sensation Sam Heughan has spoken out on the intense speculation that he might be donning the suave tuxedo as the next James Bond. The Scottish heartthrob, known for his portrayal of Jamie Fraser, appeared on Lorraine on Thursday, 24th April. The 44-year-old actor sat down with Lorraine Kelly to discuss his partnership with WWF and the significance of connecting with nature, just before taking on the challenge of the London Marathon.

During the conversation, he also touched upon his journey with Outlander and addressed the buzzing rumours about him potentially becoming the new face of 007. Lorraine couldn't hide her enthusiasm at the thought of Heughan stepping into the role of the iconic spy, declaring that it's high time for "a new Scottish bond". The suggestion seemed to elicit an awkward smile from the actor.

As they discussed his future after wrapping up Outlander, Lorraine hinted at the wide array of opportunities available to him, prompting Sam to quip, "If you've got a wee job for me here," only to be interrupted by Lorraine's insistent hints at the Bond role, saying "James Bond, just saying" multiple times. Lorraine persisted, "James Bond, James Bond, I'm just putting it out there," her excitement palpable, while Heughan found himself slightly cornered, replying humorously, "I was thinking cups of tea but I'll take it." "I think it's time to do another Scottish James Bond, it just came into my head there when I was talking to you and I think that would be fantastic," Lorraine mused aloud, clearly taken with the idea as she spoke to Heughan, who could only offer an uneasy "OK" in response.

Realising the pressure of the moment, Lorraine quickly pivoted back to discussing the nature campaign and offered an apology for springing the Bond question on him so suddenly. The Scottish TV host swiftly backtracked after realising she had put the actor in an awkward position, saying, "Sorry about the James Bond thing but it just occurred to me as I was talking to you, but I'll start that campaign!" Sam has never been shy about his ambition to play the legendary role and has previously expressed his eagerness to "see another Scottish Bond". Reflecting on his aspirations to emulate the original Scottish Bond, Sean Connery , the actor opened up in a Metro interview about a past audition for the role.

He shared: "It's a great character, and I'd certainly love to see another Scottish Bond. "I auditioned for it many years ago. I'd love to have another opportunity.

I'm not sure I fit in the suit right now. I would probably have to slim down a bit but yeah, I mean, who knows? It's a great franchise for sure. I love it.

" Connery's portrayal of 007 began with Dr. No in 1962, leading Ian Fleming to incorporate Scottish ancestry into Bond's backstory. Fans are also keen on the idea of a Scottish actor taking on the iconic part of the suave secret agent.

Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV1 and ITVX. Outlander is available to stream on MGM+ via Prime Video..
