Major roadworks are set to shut three key roads in the centre of Chelmsford for more than a week later this month. Resurfacing work is taking place across Broomfield Road, Rainsford Road and Coval Lane in the city, beginning on Monday May 12. Essex Highways say the works will "enhance the road condition" and improve journeys for residents and businesses.
The roads will be shut every night from May 12 to 21. The closures will be from 8pm to 5am. The work will include removing and renewing the road surface, and adjusting manholes and gullies as necessary.
Where possible, additional road maintenance works will be carried out to reduce the need for future traffic restrictions, Essex Highways said. A spokesman for Essex Highways said: "The team will endeavour to carry out the noisiest works before 11pm each night, with quieter activities continuing for the remainder of the shift.
"Traffic management will be adjusted throughout the programme to minimise the amount of time spent in front of individual properties. Residents located within a road closure will be supported to gain access to their driveways, however please be aware that delays may occur depending on activities taking place and whether materials have set. "No access will be permitted to through-traffic when road closures are in place.
Appropriate diversions will be in place and, when appropriate, Bus gates will be temporarily suspended overnight. Pedestian access will be maintained throughout these works." PHASE ONE: Night of 12 May 2025 Temporary closure of Broomfield Road Lane reduction on Rainsford Road/Coval Lane/Duke Street junction, managed by temporary traffic lights.
Night of 13 May 2025 Temporary closure of Broomfield Road Lane reduction on Rainsford Road/Coval Lane/Duke Street junction, managed by temporary traffic lights. PHASE TWO: Night of 14 May 2025 Temporary closure of Coval Lane Lane reduction on Rainsford Road/Coval Lane/Duke Street junction, managed by traffic lights. Coval Lane Car Park: Temporary closure of Coval Lane Lane reduction on Rainsford Rd/Coval Lane/Duke Street junction overnight managed by traffic lights.
Coval Lane Car Park: PHASE THREE: Nights of 20 and 21 May 2025 On-street parking will not be possible during working hours as it will hinder the surfacing process and movement of large vehicles. Please consider alternative parking arrangements prior to these works. Temporary overnight parking restrictions will be enforceable, and vehicles may be relocated by a specialised contractor in the event of a breach.
If this occurs, contact Essex County Council at 0345 603 7631 or Essex Police at 101 for details about the vehicle's whereabouts. Access into and out of Coval Lane car park will be affected during certain work activities (refer to table above). During these shifts we ask that drivers pay particular attention as to the access and exit arrangements and delays will occur.
