Ludhiana: A 25-year-old man is under arrest in this district after allegedly launching a violent attack on his grandfather with a bat and possibly a knife, reportedly in an attempt to snatch his salary to fund a drug habit. The victim, 65-year-old factory worker Bahadar Singh, was found with critical injuries inside his home at Mohalla Basant Nagar of the district's Daba area after being struck in the head and face with a bat. Police say he also suffered a deep cut to one of his fingers, raising suspicions that a knife may also have been used in the assault.

Bahadar Singh was alone at home with his grandson, Sunny, while the rest of the family was out. The elderly man lay injured and unattended for several hours until a neighbour alerted relatives, who moved him to a private hospital, where doctors claim his condition to be "critical, however, out of immediate danger". It was Bahadar Singh's younger son, Ravinder Singh, who lodged the first-information report (FIR).

Later, he alleged that Sunny — the son of his departed elder brother — was a drug addict who harassed members of the family frequently for money. Ravinder Singh said: "Sunny lives with us, since the family raised him after his father passed away. On the day of the incident, my father had received his salary recently.

While we were out, Sunny tried to take that money from him. When my father resisted, Sunny smashed a bat into his head and face. One of my father's fingers was also cut severely, likely by a knife.

" After the attack, Sunny allegedly fled the house, leaving the victim bleeding on the floor and unable to call for help. The family only became aware of the assault after a neighbour noticed that Bahadar Singh hadn't stepped out of the house in the morning and alerted them. Sunny was later apprehended by the family upon returning home and handed over to police.

Assistant sub-inspector Ravinder Kumar of Daba police station confirmed that Sunny had been arrested and said: "But the family did not mention drug use in their formal statement. They stated only that Sunny was a spendthrift and often harassed them for money." Sunny has been charged under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 109 (attempt to murder), 118(1) (causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons), 115(2) (causing hurt voluntarily), and 351(2) (criminal intimidation).
